A respected attorney who has distinguished himself through more than 30 years of service to individual and corporate clients throughout the world, Timothy Broas currently serves as a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP. Working from the firm’s Washington, D.C., offices, he has earned recognition from his peers in the industry as one of the top white-collar defense lawyers in the region. In addition to his record of professional success, Tim Broas has been a dedicated philanthropist and civil servant, supporting worthy causes and bringing his leadership expertise to organizations’ boards of directors.
Before launching his legal career, Tim Broas studied economics at Boston College, where he captained the school’s rugby team while pursuing his bachelor of arts. After graduating magna cum laude, he matriculated at The College of William & Mary to earn his juris doctor from the college’s School of Law. Upon earning his law degree, he gained further experience through a clerkship for Hon. Mark Sullivan, a justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Tim Broas went on to hold positions at the New York City-based Conboy, Hewitt, O’Brien & Boardman and Washington, D.C.’s Anderson, Hilbey & Blair before joining Winston & Strawn, where he continues to be admitted to practice in District of Columbia, New York, and New Jersey courts.
In his role at Winston & Strawn, Tim Broas represents clients from a wide range of industries, including major utility companies, pharmaceutical corporations, and financial institutions, among others. With experience representing clients at every stage of the legal process, from internal investigations to congressional hearings and trials, he has focused his efforts on cases related to white-collar crimes such as securities fraud, bank fraud, bribery, money laundering, and similar accusations. Representing clients such as Alstom Holdings; UBS Securities, LLC; and Otsuka America Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Tim Broas has been recognized as one of the premier attorneys in his sector of the legal world, earning inclusion in every addition of Best Lawyers in America since 2010, as well recognition as a “Super Lawyer” in five editions of Washington, D.C., Super Lawyers.
Alongside his professional success, Tim Broas has given back to his community through philanthropic efforts, providing leadership expertise to several non-profit organizations and participating in charity events. Political representatives from the highest levels of government have chosen him to assist in the leadership of important civic organizations; Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley appointed him to the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s College, two Virginia Governors have placed him on Mount Vernon’s Board of Visitors, and President Obama appointed him to the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Additionally, Tim Broas serves on the leadership team of Partners in Health, a charity focused on bringing healthcare to underserved communities around the world, and he has participated in events such as the Pan-Mass Challenge, a 165-mile bike ride supporting the ground-breaking research performed at Boston’s Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
